What a strategy consultation covers
A first conversation is a needs assessment. It typically covers:
- The people, roles, and obligations your business depends on, and what would happen if one of them changed suddenly
- What coverage or planning already exists, including policies you may have forgotten about or inherited from a previous advisor
- Which of the planning questions on this site actually apply to your situation. Most businesses only need two or three, not all of them
- Realistic next steps, including when your accountant or lawyer should be brought in, and what they would need to review
It does not include a quote, a policy illustration, or a recommendation on your first call; those come later, after the actual needs assessment and, where relevant, your own professionals' input.
How to prepare, a free checklist
You don't need to book anything to use this. Working through these questions on your own, or with your management team, will make any eventual conversation more useful:
List the two or three people your business would struggle to operate without, and roughly how long it would take to replace each one.
Pull together any existing life insurance policies connected to the business, personal or corporate, and note who owns each one and who the beneficiary is.
If you have shareholders or partners, find your buy-sell or shareholders' agreement (if one exists) and check when it was last updated.
Estimate your business's retained earnings beyond what you need for operations over the next 12 to 24 months.
Write down what prompted you to look into this now. A loan requirement, a partner's request, a life event, or general planning all lead to different priorities.
Note which of your own professional advisors, accountant, lawyer, existing insurance advisor, you'd want involved in any next step.
